War Service

On 16 Jun 1915 at Gallipoli, Thomas was taken on strength by the 11th Battalion. On 17 Jul 1915 he reported sick with a hernia, and was seen by the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station on 18 Jul 1915 before boarding HMHS Clacton offshore the same day and beign evacuated to Mudros on Lemnos Island. On 25 Jul 1915 he boarded HMHS Neuralia for Malta where he disembarked on 24 Jul 1915 and was admitted to hospital. On 8 Aug 1915 he was embarked on another hospital ship for England where on 16 Aug 1915 he was admitted to the 4th London General Hospital.

Thomas returned to Egypt, reaching Ghezireh on 14 Feb 1916, and rejoining the battalion at Serapeum on 6 Mar 1916. On 18 Mar 1916 Thomas was appointed Lance Corporal, and on 29 Mar 1916 along with the rest of the 11th Battalion he boarded HMT Corsican in Alexandria Harbour. Arriving in Marseilles on 5 Apr 1916 they moved north over he next few days by railway cattle wagons.

Thomas was promoted Corporal on 21 Aug 1916, and then Temporary Sergeant on 5 Dec 1916. The later promotion was confirmed on 12 Feb 1917. During April and May 1916 he attended training course, including an Officer's course at Tidworth. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 12 Jul 1917, he rejoined the 11th Battalion on 12 Nov 1917.

On 1 Jan 1918 he was promoted Lieutenant, and on 31 Aug 1918 he reported sick to hospital. Seen first by the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, on the same day he was moved to the 33rd Casualty Clearing Station, who on 1 Sep 1918 placed him on Ambulance Train No.15 for the 8th General Hospital at Rouen. The next day he was evacuated through Le Havre to England aboard HMHS St Patrick. On 3 Sep 1918 he was admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital and on discharge was listed for return to Australia.

Thomas's appointment was terminated on 25 Mar 1919.
