Brief History

Formed in part in late 1939, it was mobilised at Coburg, Victoria in December 1941, following which it moved to Bonegilla. In January 1942 the unit moved to Alice Springs wher eit had detachments upgrading and maintaining staging camps along the north/south road, as well as the road to Mt Isa in Queensland. In July 1943 they moved to Melbourne, and then in September to Kapooka for rest and retraining. In November they moved to Townsville, with a platoon at Rocklea in Brisbane. Another platoon was placed at Smyths Siding.


In July 1944 the unit moved to Grovelly and undertook more traditional construction role. In March 1945 the unit became part of the 9th Australian Infnatry Division troops ear marked to liberate the area around Brunei Bay, and so moved to the staging area on Morotai. In june 1945 they landed on Labaun Island where they built and then operated the essential services for the base established there.
