Brief History

Originally known as the 2nd Infantry Training Battalion, one of three training battalions that made up the '4th Infantry Training Brigade, and its role was to train recruits for the 2nd AMF (CMF) Infantry Brigade. Once formed the unit moved to Queenscliff, before moving to Watsonia in March 1942.

In May 1943 they moved to Cowra in new South Wales here from October 1943 all recruit training (except Western Australia) was concentrated. It was here that the unit was renamed as the 1st Australian Recruit Training Battalion

From this point all recruits regardless of their Corps destination received common training with corps selection undertaken after completion of recruit training. The 1st Australian Recruit Training Battalion continued to train recruits until the end of the war.
