Brief History
In March 1943 the Torres Strait Infantry Battalion and the Torres Strait Employment Company were combined to form thsi unit which was charged with operating the domestic services on Thursday Island. By May 1943 enough Torres Strait Islanders had been recruitedto form a separate Torres Strait Pioneer Company.
The continued to service the expanding military presence on the island for the rest of the war including Port Operation, and Transport to their earlier roles.
