Brief History

This unit was raised at Paddington, New South Wales in September 1941 as the Eastern Command Bulk Issue Petrol & Oil Depot, and it was mobilised in December 1941. In April 1942 it was renamed NSW Line of Communication Area BIPOD. During October 1943, when the unit's HQ moved to Homebush the unit had a strength of 907 all ranks, manning depots around the state.

In June 1943, 51 and 52 BIPOD Platoons were formed and left soon after for Merauke in Dutch New Guinea, and Port Moresby. In April 1944 a detachment moved to Cairns, becoming 58 BIPOD Platoon in May 1944. As the war moved further from Australia, oil infrastructure was gradually returned to oil companies, but this unit continued to operate at a reduced level from Homebush until the end of the war.
