Brief History
This unit was mobilised in December 1941 as the Northern Command Advanced Ordnance Depot at Graythorne in Queensland with a detachment at Sellheim near Charters Towers. With the return of troops from the Middle East in March 1942 this unit was reorganised as the 3rd Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot with headquarters at Graythorpe, manned by personnel from 5th Ordnance Stores Company.
The 31st Forward Ordnance Depot at Charters Towers was enlarged and now formed the 12th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot, and the 3rd Australian Advanced Ordance Depot headquarters moved to Toowoomba, beginning the move in April, and completed in September. No. 1 Sub Depot (Motor Transport Spares) was at Harristown; with detachments at Brisbane and Toowoomba; No. 2 Sub Depot (General & Clothing) was at Wallangarra with detachments at Cambooya and Clifon; No. 3 Sub Depot (Armaments) was at Toowoomba; the Returned Stores Depot was at Gaythorne; and the Equipment Section and Clothing Section were at Milton.
During 1943 some of the sub units relocated until a reorganisation in August 1944 saw he disbanding of 5th Australian Ordnance Stores Company at Wallagarra and 2/4th Ordbance Stores Company with personnel moving to the sub units that they worked in. At the end ogf the war No. 3 Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot Depot HQs was still at Wallangarra together with thre Motor Transport sections, four general stores & clothing sections two technical stores sections, five clerical increments and five stores increments.
