Brief History

Mobilised in December 1941 while they were in camp at Rutherford the 41st Australian Infantry Battalion (Byron Regiment) moved to Bob's Farm to establish defensive positions along Newcastle Bight with Companies locate at Mac's Track and Salt Ash. In March they moved to Greta to undergo intensive training before moving to Medowie in May followed by a return to Bob's Farm in June. In July they moved to Rutherford, before a move in November 1942 to Frenchs Forest where they remained until after they had absorbed the 2nd Australian Infantry Battalion to form the 41/2nd Australian Infantry Battalion in December 1943.


In March 1944 they moved to Ingleburn, and then t the St Ives Showground the following month, relocating closer to St Ives in May by which time they were little more than a Labouring unit. By October 1944 the 41/2nd Australian Infantry battalion was the only unit left in the 1st Australian Infantry Brigade Group with their main purpose being to act as a holding unit for underage soldiers awaiting a posting.
