Brief History

Mobilised at Narellan in New South Wales in December 1941. With the threat to Sydney reduced after the Coral Sea and Midway naval Battles, the 2nd Infantry Division was sent to Western Australia, with the 4th Australian Casualty Clearing Station settling first at Claremont, and then in August 1942 at Helena Vale to service troops in the general Perth area. In October, with additional hospital resources moving to the area, the unit moved to Moora to service the units of the 4th Infantry Division.

In January 1943 their Light Section moved to Gingin before a general reorganisation which saw the unit moving to Mullewa to relieve the 8th CCS which had been serving units of the 2nd Infantry Division. In April they were renamed as the 104th Australian Casualty Clearing Station, and they sent a detachment back to Moora until May. With the reduction of troop numbers in Western Australia, they returned to New South Wales in June for leave, reassembling in July 1943 at Wondecla in Queensland. In November 1944 the 104th Australian Casualty Clearing Station moved to Aitape in New Guinea in support of 6th Infantry Division troops moving on Wewak. In April 1945 they absorbed the 41st Hospital laundry Unit before moving to Cape Wom in May after Wewak had been captured. They remained at Cape Wom until the end of the war.
