Brief History

Detachments from Fortress Engineers, Brisbane Fixed Defence, had been servicing the coastal artillery units at Caloundra since April 1942. In December those on Moreton Island were grouped together to form the 5th Fortress Company, with its HQ housed at Cowan Battery. 'O' Heavy Battery arrived at Rous Bay and became a section of 5th Australian Fortress Company. With the maintenance staff transferring from Engineers to Artillery, there was no longer a need for the unit and it was disbanded.
