There were several iterations before a reform in May 1943 saw the transfer of some Engineering duties to the Artillery staff and the renaming of the balance of the unit to Fortress Engineers Fremantle. In September 1943 the unit name changed again to 8th Australian Anti-Aircraft & Fortress Company.


With the reduction in likely hood of Japanese raids on Fremantle the unit was increasingly used on general works projects. In June 1945 they moved to Queen Street Drill Hall where they remained for the duration.
