Brief History

In March 1943 the Torres Strait Infantry Battalion and the Torres Strait Employment Company were combined to form this unit which was then charged with operating the domestic services on Thursday Island. By May 1943 enough Torres Strait Islanders had been recruited to form a separate Torres Strait Pioneer Company.


They continued to service the expanding military presence on the island for the rest of the war adding Port Operation, and Transport to their earlier role.
