Brief History

Originally known as 1st Australian Detention Barracks the unit was formed in Jerusalem in March 1940 to undertke the detention of Australian troops in the Middle East. In November 1941 the unit expanded and separated to form two addition units 2 Detention Barracks at Hill 69, and 3 Detention Barracks at Nuseirat. In April 1942 1st Australina Detention barracks returned to Australia, and were renamed 2/1st Australian Detention Barracks.


After leave they gathered at Groverly in Queensland during June 1942, and remained there until the end of the war.
