==Brief History==
This unit was formed at Claremont in late 1939 in response to the formation of the Second AIF and was associated with the Infantry Training Depot at Ascot before it moved to Northam as the 4th AIF Infantry Training Battalion. From September 1940 the Western Command General Details camp was also at Claremont and the roles of these units overlapped in the early part of the war.


The unit's role was to receive and process new recruits, before allocating them to a training unit either in WA or in the eastern states. Following General Mobilisation, in January 1942 the unit was expanded to its full war establishment and processed recruits for both the AIF and the AMF (Militia). In May 1942 the unit was renamed as the WA Line of Communication Area RRD and it shared a HQ with the WA Line of Communication Area GDD. In August 1943, the RRD moved to Karrakatta until February 1944 when it returned to Claremont and the two units joined to form the WA Line of Communication RR & GDD.
