==War Service==
Entering the training depot he joined the 21st Depot Company on 4 Aug 1915.  On 4 Nov 1915 Roy was allocated to the 12th reinforcement draft for the 10th Light Horse, and travelled with them to Egypt. 
 
Two months after arriving in Egypt he was transferred from Serapeum to Heliopolis on 26 Feb 1916 where he joined the [[10th Light Horse Regiment]].  Roy was hospitalised with the [[3rd Light Horse Brigade Field Ambulance]] from 4 Jul 1916 till 9 Jul 1916 with gastro-enteritis. This was followed by another stint in medical care from 16 - 25 Aug 1916. In Mar 1917 Roy spent another four days in hospital, this time with pneumonia, and on returning to his unit, on 27 Apr 1917 he was allocated the rank of Lance Corporal at Marakeb in Palestine.
 
In Sep 1917 at Shellal, Egypt, Roy participated in a course on the Hotchkiss Rifle and he qualified.  He was made an acting Corporal between 20 May and 19 Aug 1918 and then promoted Corporal on 4 Nov 1918 when the regiment reached Homs (Syria). From 1 - 16 Jul 1918 Roy had been given time off in a Rest Camp at Port Said.
  
On 21 Apr 1919 Roy fell ill with appendicitis, and on 22 Apr 1919 he was admitted to the [[14th Australian General Hospital]] at Abbassia. His condition was described as serious until 30 Apr 1919, when his condition was described as "Improved". On 25 May 1919 he was discharged from the 14th AGH to the Rest Camp at Port Said to await a ship home to Australia from Kantara. Roy was discharged by the 5th Military District on 2 Nov 1919.




==Post War==
Roy married Florence Charlotte Hartley during 1922 in Perth. They had three children, 2 boys and one girl. Allan Smith was born during 1929.
