==War Service==
On 27 Sep 1942 May enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service at Claremont and was granted Trade Grouping of Stenographer TG II. On 19 Oct 1942 May was transferred to [[Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot]]. On 23 Jun 1943 May was transferred to the [[Western Australian Echelon & Records]] where on 2 Jul 1943 she was promoted Acting Corporal. Her rank was confirmed on  2 Oct 1943 having undertaken a course for NCOs and potential NCOs between 21 Aug and 30 Sep 1944 (85.5% achieved). Granted LWOP from 14 Feb 1944 until 10 Apr 1944. On 8 Feb 1946 May was transferred from WA Echelon and Records to [[31st AWAS Barrack]] for discharge which took place on 11 Feb 1946.

==Post War==
Electoral Roll entries: 1949 - 1958 at Carradine road, Armadale; 1968 at Stephey road, Armadale; 1972 at 62 St Kilda road, Rivervale, stenographer; 1980 at unit 3, 51 Leonora street, Como, secretary. May's medals and Discharge Certificate were lost during Cyclone Tracy in Darwin 1974. 
===Notes===
Known to the Army as May Cardinal, during 1946 Alice May Cardinal married Robert Nicholas Johnstone who had served in the RAN. Robert's widowed mother lived in Carradine road, Armadale. Robert died on 21 Jul 1998, aged 76 in Armadale.
