Brief History
Early history of coastal artillery training is poor, but by late 1941 training units were established in Brisbane, Sydney and Fremantle. The 1st Heavy Training Battery was operational at Fort Lytton in Queensland. In May 1942 it moved to Beaudesert, and then in June to Tabragalba until March 1943 when it moved back to Fort Lytton. During all this time they trained men for the 'Letter' batteries in the use of 155mm mobile guns for coastal defence.
In November 1943 the unit was renamed 1st Australian Coast Artillery Training Battery, and they continued in their role until mid 1944 when VDC units took over guns in the south, releasing men for northern units. In July 1944 the unit moved to North Head, in Sydney, and was absorbed into other units.
