War Service

Enlisted in the CMF on 6 Mar 1941, and was a member of the 16th Australian Infantry Battalion (Cameron Highlander's Regiment) based at the Melville camp. Thomas was called up for full time service on 16 Dec 1941. On 11 Mar 1942 he was found to have been AWOL from 7:00am to 1:30pm on 9 Mar 1942. Fined 4/- and forfeited 6/- for the day's pay. Soon after on 10 Apr 1942 at Childers he was appointed Lance Corporal, and 11 days later on 21 Apr 1942 Acting Corporal. From 26 until 29 Apr 1942 he was in the care of the 8th Casualty Clearing Station at Helena Vale.

Thomas joined the AIF on 13 Jul 1942, and on 13 Aug 1942 he was made Lance Sergeant. From 18 Sep until 18 Oct 1942 he attended a course that he received an 83% pass on. In February 1943, along with the rest of the battalion he moved to the Northern Territory defensive line via Adelaide. On 19 Mar 1943
