Brief History

No. 1 Air Navigation School was formed at Parkes, New South Wales on 1 Nov 1940. By the end of the month, the unit had 10 Anson aircraft on strength. The first Air Observers' Course commenced on 21 November, with trainees graduating on 17 Dec 1940. Activity followed a routine, not overly affected by outside influences. However, accidents did occur from time to time, the worst one being when an Anson acting as a Air Ambulance crashed killing all aboard.

During December 1942, the strength of the unit stood at 217 members (including 59 trainees) and 18 Anson aircraft. No. 1 Air Navigation School was disbanded on 9 Dec 1943.
