On 26 Oct 1940 Ken enlisted in the part time 'Y' (Militia) Company of the [[5th Australian Garrison Battalion]]. Ken was promoted Acting Sergeant with 'Y' Company on 24 Dec 1940  and had his rank confirmed on 27 Feb 1941, having completed a 14 day full time course of instruction during January. On 15 Dec 1941 he was called up for full time duty and taken on strength by the [[5th Australian Garrison Battalion]].
