Pre War

War Service

On 3 Feb 1941 Joseph enlisted in the CMF in Perth and was taken on strength by the Western Command Ordnance Workshop as a Trade Group I Fitter. On 10 Feb 1941 he was transferred to HQ Brigade at Melville Camp. He was appointed as a Lance Corporal on 18 Apr 1941, and promoted Corporal on 9 May 1941, and again appointed, this time to Lance Sergeant on 1 Sep 1941.


On 13 Sep 1941 Joseph was transferred to the 279th Light Aid Detachment, and soon after was sent to a training course at Guildford from 26 Sep - 16 Oct 1941. On 24 Oct 1941 Joseph was promoted Sergeant, and following some leave he was appointed a Warrant Officer Class II on 4 Jan 1942.


On 23 Jul 1942 Joseph was admitted to the 8th Australian Casualty Clearing Station who passed him on to the 118th Australian General Hospital in Northam and they in turn on 11 Sep 1942 sent him to the ARD for investigation of his medical condition. On 25 Sep 1942 he was able to rejoin the 279th LAD, but he was admitted on 23 Oct 1942 to the 8th Australian Casualty Clearing Station, who admitted him to the 110th Australian Base Hospital on 25 Oct 1942. Released on 31 Oct 1942 Joseph was considered no longer fit enough to continue and was sent to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 2 Dec 1942 for discharge the same day.
