John was mobilised at Swanbourne on 4 Apr 1941, and was posted to the [[5th Australian Garrison Battalion]]. on 4 Nov 1941 John was admitted to the [[110th Australian Base Hospital]] for a week, returning to his unit on 11 November. On 20 Jul 1942 he was again admitted to the [[110th Australian Base Hospital]] who passed him to the [[109th Australian Convalescent Depot]] They granted him sick leave from 6 - 27 Oct 1942 after which he rejoined his battalion on 6 Nov 1942. However, John was discharged on 6 Dec 1942 as medically unfit - no details are included in his scanned records.
