Herbert was wounded and was treated by the 13th Australian Field Ambulance on 16 Jul 1917. He was passed to the 4th Australian Field Ambulance who cared for him until 28 Jul 1917, treating him for a shell wound to his heel, before releasing him to the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station. Placed on an Ambulance Train for the 15th Casualty Clearing Station where he spent 38 Jul to 1 Aug 1917, before being deemed fit enough to rejoin his unit.
