Pre War

War Service

On 24 Jan 1943 Helen enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service before transferring to the 6th AWS Training Company. During her time there she was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital from 2 - 11 Mar 1943. Training completed she was graded as a Motor Transport Driver TG II, and following a few days leave she was transferred to the 4th Australian Ambulance Car Company on 23 Apr 1943.


From 12 May until 5 Jul 1943 Helen was detached to the 37th Australian Camp Hospital. Her next detachment was to the 29th Australian Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery from 6 Jul to 9 Sep 1943, after which she took Leave Without Pay (LWOP) from 9 Sep - 7 Oct 1943. On 8 October she returned to the 29th Australian Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery until 18 Nov 1943 when she returned to her host unit. On 7 Jan 1944 she was detached to 110th Australian Base Hospital and 10 days later was given a pay increase, having completed 1 year's service.


Helen's next detachment was to 39th Australian Camp Hospital on Rottnest Island from 9 Feb - 21 Aug 1944, followed by some LWOP from 21 Aug - 6 Nov 1944. On 13 Sep 1944 Helen returned to 39th Australian Camp Hospital until 6 Nov 1944 before returning to base, and then on 15 Nov 1944 she was detached to the 110th Australian Base Hospital, remaining with them until 1 May 1945. From 16 - 30 May 1945, and 26 Jun to 27 Jul 1945 Helen was detached to the [[75th Australian Camp Hospital[[ at Melville, returning to 110th Australian Base Hospital on 27 July. She was admitted to the hospital on 23 Sep 1945 with an injury to her Coccyx and was released to duty at the hospital on 2 Oct 1945.


Helen was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 11 Jan 1946 for discharge on 18 Jan 1946.

Post War

During 1946 Helen married Gordon Spurgeon Ohrt in the Katanning district. Gordon died on 24 Feb 2007, aged 87 in Claremont. Two daughters ?? Jill Margaret, and Noah Marjorie.
