On 21 Oct 1940 Garnet enlisted in the CMF and was allocated to the 55th Australian Anti Aircraft Company RAE. On 28 Feb 1941 Garnet was appointed Lance Corporal and on 26 Aug 1941 he was promoted Acting Corporal. On 4 Sep 1941 he was detached to Fortress Company Rottnest until 4 Oct 1941. Garnet was then sent on a Machine Gun School from 18 - 20 Dec 1941.
From 20 - 27 Feb 1942 Garnet received treatment in the 110th Australian Base Hospital, ailment not recorded. On 21 Jun 1942 Garnet was sent to the School of Military Engineering (Fortress) in New South Wales, returning to his unit on 29 Aug 1942 and two days later he enlisted in the 2nd AIF.
