War Service

Frederick embarked for Gallipoli with the 10th Light Horse Regiment from Alexandria on 16 May 1915.

On 18 Jun 1915 Fred was one of six Troopers injured by one Turkish shell while a member of a party of men seeking to reinforce Walker's Ridge. He suffered a shrapnel wound to his scrotum and left testicle. He was evacuated to Egypt on HMHS Gascon where he was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis on 30 Jun 1915 and held by them until 16 Jul 1915.

Discharged from hospital on 16 Jul 1915, he spent time rehabilitating in the 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital (16 Jul to 17 Aug 1915) and at the Ras-el-tin Convalescent Hospital until 26 Sep 1915. On 4 Oct 1915 (having embarked aboard HMHS Imkoski at Alexandria on 27 Sep 1915), he rejoined his unit on Rhododendron Spur, Gallipoli. On 30 Oct 1915 at Gallipoli he reported ill to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Field Ambulance, followed on 2 Nov 1915 when he was transferred to the 13th Casualty Clearing Station before being again sent to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital Heliopolis, this time aboard HMHS Nevasa. Fred remained with the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital from 7 Nov until 28 Dec 1915.

On 28 Dec 1915 he was transferred to the Convalescent Camp in Port Said with enteric, and so on 21 Jan 1916 he was sent back to Australia from Suez, disembarking in Fremantle on 29 Feb 1916 'for 3 months change'. However, instead he was discharged by the 5th Military District on 5 Jun 1916.

Neville Browning's Gallipoli to Tripoli at p.71 notes that Fred was one of 6 men wounded by one shrapnel shell on 18th June 1915.

Post War

Electoral Roll entries - 1916 a farmer at Kelmscott, and in 1925 a farmer at Bantine. By 1931 he is a storekeeper in Calingiri with his wife Julia Hannah Finnemore (nee Searle) the postmistress, where they remain until after WW2. They married in Fremantle in 1927. Between 1949 and 1958 they are living at 240 Mill Point Road, South Perth with Fred described as a businessman. Julia remains in the family home after Fred's death, appearing on the 1963 roll. She died on 26 May 1966 aged 74.
