War Service

Entering Blackboy Hill camp on 21 Mar 1916 Ellis was allocated to the 3rd reinforcement draft for the 51st Battalion after two weeks basic training and travelled with them to England. On arrival they were sent to the Salisbury Plains to complete their training. While there, on 13 Jan 1917 Ellis was charged with being AWOL from 1:00am to 4:00pm on 12 Jan 1917. Awarded 3 day's confined to barracks and the loss of a day's pay.

On 4 Feb 1917 he proceeded overseas to France through Folkestone aboard HMT Princess Victoria, and on 10 Feb 1917 he joined the 51st Battalion in the field at Flers where they were in the front lines. There are no entries in his records to indicate anything other than illness while he was in England, France and Belgium.

On 13 Feb 1918 while on leave in England, Ellis was admitted to the 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital in Bulford, suffering with Furnunculosis. Following treatment he was discharged on 18 Feb 1918 to enjoy the balance of his leave.

On 6 Nov 1918 Ellis attended the 13th Australian Filed Ambulance with bronchitis and was immediately passed to the 41st Stationary Hospital. Two days later he was transferred to the 1st General Hospital in Etretat, and he also spent time with the 1st Presbyterian USA General Hospital in Etretat with Bronchitis and an injury to his right hand. He was transferred to England aboard HMT Aberdonian on 6 Dec 1918, and the next day he was admitted to the Endel Street Military Hospital in London still suffering with Bronchitis. On 17 Dec 1918 he was discharged to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital and soon after granted furlough until 2 Jan 1919.

Ellis returned from leave a day late and was charged with being AWOL, forfeiting 2 day's pay. During the voyage home, Ellis was admitted to the ship's Hospital frr the treatment of abscesses.

Post War

In early 1925 in the Murray District, Ellis married Lucille Francis Cusack. Lucille died in 1957.

During WW2 Ellis enlisted on 27 Apr 1942 in the 12 Battalion (Jarrah) Volunteer Defence Corps and served as a Lance Sergeant. He was discharged on 16 May 1943.
