Brief History

The 13th Australian Infantry Battalion (Macquarie Regiment) was mobilised while it was in camp at Rutherford, NSW in December 1941. They moved to Gan Gan (north of Newcastle NSW) with companies at Anna Bay, Fingal Bay and Shoal Bay to establish beach defences. In March 1942 they moved to Greta to undertake a period of intensive training before returning to Gan Gan in May. They relocated away from the beach front at Tomago in June.

In September 1942 manpower shortages led to the 13th Australian Infantry Battalion moving to Rutherford where they were merged with the 33rd Australian Infantry battalion to form the 13/33rd Australian Infantry Battalion. They then move to St Ives in November 1942 where they had 17 months before moving to Frenchs Forest in April 1944, and then to the St Ives Showground in May, losing 'A' Company which was sent to Nerang in Queensland to assist the 4th Armoured Brigade Group exercise infantry/tank training. In September 1944 the main unit moved to Singleton but by then they were basically a holding unit only. They were disbanded in November 1944.
