General Information

In January 1942 the 116th Australian General Hospital was raised in Charters Towers with a capacity of 600 beds. By 17 Mar 1942 the 116th AGH had moved itself into the Mount Carmel College in Charters Towers, adjacent to the local airfield. The Charters Towers air base, allowed patients to be flown in from New Guinea, both Australian and allied servicemen alike. However, by May 1944 Charters Towers was a minor military area and the hospital moved to Jungara near Cairns where they could better serve the troops in north Queensland. In May 1945 they absorbed the 4th Hospital Laundry Unit, in preparation for moving to Rocky Creek, but the end of the war came before they could move.
