At some point he was transferred to the 8th reinforcement draft for the 11th Battalion, travelling with them to Egypt. On arrival in Egypt Fred was sent to the 1st Training Battalion at Zeitoun, and from there on 21 Oct 1915 to Sarpi on Lemnos Island.
On 20 Dec 1915 on Lemnos Island Fred was admitted to the 3rd Field Ambulance with mumps, who in turn transferred him to the 3rd Australian General Hospital's isolation ward on the island. On 9 Jan 1916 he was evacuated to Egypt aboard HMHS Carisbrook Castle, arriving in Alexandria on 11 Jan 1916.
Admitted to the 19th General Hospital with Paratyphoid on 12 Jan 1916, a week later on 20 January he was transferred to the 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Ghezireh until he was released to duty on 3 Mar 1916, rejoining the battalion in Serapeum on 10 Mar 1916.
On 29 Mar 1916 he boarded the HMT Corsican in Alexandria harbour for Marseilles, disembarking there on 5 Apr 1916.
Fred was Killed in Action during an attempted German raid on the Australian front lines in the evening of 30 May 1916 near Cordonerrie Farm, Fromelles. Heavy artillery and machine gun fire for more than an hour left the trenches badly battered and casualties totalling 36 killed, 61 wounded and 6 missing, believed to have been buried or blown to pieces by the artillery.
