Don enlisted in the 2nd AIF at Karrakatta on 26 Feb 1946, and was sent on 9 Mar 1946 to the Australian Recruit Training Centre's 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, arriving there on 15 Mar 1946 for basic training. His records note that he had volunteered to serve with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) Japan. On 31 May 1946 he was transferred to the 6th Advanced Reinforcement Depot, and on 23 Jul 1946 he was sent to the 3rd Military District for allocation to a unit.
