Enlisted in Pinjarra. On 4 May 1915 he was allocated to the 1st Reinforcement draft for the [[28th Battalion]]. Soon after he spent several days in an isolation hospital, reason not given, but was well enough on 29 May 1915 to be allocated to 'D 'Company of the 28th Battalion which sailed for Egypt from Fremantle aboard [[HMAT A11 Ascanius]] on 9 Jun 1915.

Arrived in Suez on 29 Jun 1915.  After disembarking they were sent by train to Polygon Camp in Abbassia near Cairo.  Bill was sent to hospital in Abbassia on 10 Jul 1915. During August the battalion performed Garrison Duty at the Citadel until the 30th when they marched out to the camp at the aerodrome.

Embarked with the Battalion on the [[HMT Ivernia]] for Gallipoli on 4 Sep 1915, and arrived off Lemnos at 9pm on 6 Sep 1915, and entered the harbour next morning. On 10 Sep 1915 the battalion landed at Anzac Cove.

Their ship arrived in Port Suez on 29 Jun 1915 at 11:30pm and anchored in the bay. After disembarking on 2 July they were sent by train to Polygon Camp in Abbassia near Cairo.  Bill was sent to hospital in Abbassia on 10 Jul 1915. During August the battalion performed Garrison Duty at the Citadel until the 30th when they marched out to the camp at the aerodrome.

Wounded in Action on 13 Oct 1915 with gum shot wounds to both forearms. The unit war diary makes mention of snipers being active, and the Turks using 75mm guns on a daily basis so wounds could have been from either cause. Treated by the 7th Australian Field Ambulance and the 16th Casualty Clearing Station, he was evacuated to [[HMHS Valdivia]] on the 14th. Transferred to [[HMHS Aquitania]] on 21 Oct 1915, he was transported to England where on 28 Oct 1915 he was admitted to the 5th London General Hospital in Lambeth.

His records do not record his discharge from hospital, but he entered the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital in England on 31 May 1916, and on 24 Jun 1916 began the voyage back to Australia for a medical discharge.

Wounded in Action on 13 Oct 1915 with gun shot wounds to both forearms. The unit war diary makes mention of snipers being active, and the Turks using 75mm guns on a daily basis so wounds could have been from either cause. At the time the battalion was manning trenches on the Lower Cheshire Ridge. Treated by the [[7th Field Ambulance]] and the 16th Casualty Clearing Station on 13 Oct 1915, he was evacuated to [[HMHS Valdivia]] on 14 Oct 1915. His records do not record his discharge from 5th London General Hospital, but it can be deduced that it was 30 May 1916, as he was a patient of the [[1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital]] in England from 31 May 1916 to 8 Jun 1916. As a result of the severity of the wounds he was sent back to Australia on the [[HMAT A14 Euripides]] on 24 Jun 1916, arriving in Fremantle on 3 Aug 1916 for a medical discharge. William was discharged by the 5th Military District on 9 Nov 1916.

War Service

Enlisted in Pinjarra. On 4 May 1915 he was allocated to the 1st Reinforcement draft for the 28th Battalion. Soon after he spent several days in an isolation hospital, reason not given, but was well enough on 29 May 1915 to be allocated to 'D 'Company of the 28th Battalion which sailed for Egypt from Fremantle aboard HMAT A11 Ascanius on 9 Jun 1915.

William embarked with the Battalion on the HMT Ivernia for Gallipoli from Alexandria on 4 Sep 1915, arriving off Mudros Harbour on Lemnos Island at 9:00pm on 6 Sep 1915, entering the harbour the next morning. On 10 Sep 1915 the battalion transferred to the HMS Sarnia for the journey from Mudros harbour to Anzac Cove.

Treated by the 7th Field Ambulance and the 16th Casualty Clearing Station on 13 Oct 1915, he was evacuated to HMHS Valdivia on 14 Oct 1915. Transferred to HMHS Aquitania on 21 Oct 1915, he was transported to England where on 28 Oct 1915 he was admitted to the 5th London General Hospital in Lambeth.

His records do not record his discharge from 5th London General Hospital, but it can be deduced that it was 30 May 1916, as he was a patient of the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital in England from 31 May 1916 to 8 Jun 1916. As a result of the severity of the wounds he was sent back to Australia on the HMAT A14 Euripides on 24 Jun 1916, arriving in Fremantle on 3 Aug 1916 for a medical discharge. William was discharged by the 5th Military District on 9 Nov 1916.

Post War
