George enlisted for part time service in Claremont on 30 Nov 1940 and was allocated to 'Y' Company of the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion following the death of his wife. He named Muriel as his next of kin. In January 1941 he completed a 14 day continuous training cap at Melville. While he was called up for full time service on 15 May 1941 it appears to have commenced on 15 Dec 1941.
On 11 May 1942 he transferred to the 29th Australian Garrison Battalion at Swanbourne. Admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital on 4 Oct 1942, he was transferred to LMCH on 27 October and returned to his unit on 1 December. Needing help again he was evacuated to the camp hospital at Guildford on 14 Apr 1943, returning to his battalion on 2 May. Granted Leave Without Pay on 8 Dec 1943, he added some leave credits and returned to the battalion on 25 Jan 1944. On 1 Jul 1944 George was granted Proficiency Pay.
On 6 Mar 1944 George was evacuated to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital with a back injury (declared to have occurred while on duty and with no negligence involved). On 24 Mar 1944 he was transferred to the 118th Australian General Hospital . After a lengthy period in their care he was released to the York Convalescent Depot on 8 Jun 1944. Re-admitted to the 118th Australian General Hospital on 6 July, he was quickly passed onto the 109th Australian Convalescent Depot on 10 Jul 1944. On 31 Jul 1944 he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 2 Aug 1944 where he was granted leave until 17 Aug 1944.
