Ian was instrumental in working with then Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds to have a park near where Gerald grew up named after him and a memorial stone installed. For 10 or more years until Ian died the Council conducted a memorial service in the park.

Pre War

Completed Primary School education to the Intermediate level, and was able to play bagpipes. Prior to enlistment Ian was a labourer employed by the Metropolitan Water Supply which had a depot in Kelmscott.

War Service

On 27 Jul 1951 Ian enlisted in the Special Force Army for a two year term. and was posted to the 6th Recruit Training Company where on 2 Oct 1951 was graded as a Private, 1 Star. On 26 Nov 1951 Ian was posted to the Unallotted list Southern Command before transferring to 2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) on 31 Dec 1951.

Transferred to a reinforcement unit, on 16 May 1952 Ian emplaned for Japan via Darwin, deplaning at Ideahuni Japan on 18 May 1952, and on the next day was allocated to 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), then in Korea. On 13 Aug 1952 Ian embarked in Kure, Japan for Korea, disembarking there on 14 Aug 1952, joining 3 RAR the next day.
